  5.     For more than a century, Roman Catholics have flocked to the
  6. shrine at Lourdes to pray and bathe in the sacred waters of the
  7. grotto spring. Five million pilgrims are expected to visit this
  8. year, enriching the town by nearly $400 million. So many
  9. faithful are coming, in fact, that a holy-water shortage has
  10. developed. For the first time in its history, Lourdes is
  11. rationing the blessed potion.

  13.     Lourdes officials suggest that the shortage may even be a
  14. blessing in disguise. "It's a good opportunity to explain to
  15. people that you don't just come to Lourdes to drink the water
  16. or get dunked," said spokesman Loic Bondu. "What's important
  17. is the act and personal conversion. Faith isn't found in water
  18. alone." Nor, town officials might be praying, is tourism.
